How to make a pattern from Pattern Magic 3?

To give you an example of how to make a pattern from Pattern Magic 3, we will show you how to make the "Spiral Dress" from Chapter 3: Spiral Patterns. This pattern creates a dress with a spiral-shaped skirt that wraps around the body. The pattern is based on a basic bodice block and a half-circle skirt block.

Here are the steps to make the pattern:

  • Trace your basic bodice block on a piece of paper. Mark the center front (CF), center back (CB), bust point (BP), waistline (WL), side seam (SS), shoulder seam (SH), armhole (AH), neckline (NL), dart legs (DL), dart point (DP), dart intake (DI), and dart centerline (DC).

  • Cut out your bodice block along the outline.

  • Close the dart on your bodice block by folding it along the DC and matching the DL. Tape or pin the dart closed.

  • Trace your half-circle skirt block on another piece of paper. Mark the CF, CB, WL, SS, hemline (HL), radius (R), circumference (C), and quarter points (QP).

  • Cut out your skirt block along the outline.

  • Divide your skirt block into four equal parts by drawing lines from the QP to the R. Label them as A, B, C, and D.

  • Cut along these lines to separate your skirt block into four pieces.

  • Pivot your bodice block around the BP until the CF aligns with one of the SS of your skirt block. Tape or pin them together.

  • Pivot your bodice block around the BP again until the CB aligns with another SS of your skirt block. Tape or pin them together.

  • You should now have two pieces of skirt attached to your bodice block at opposite sides. Label them as E and F.

  • Cut along the WL of piece E from CF to SS. Cut along the WL of piece F from CB to SS.

  • Pivot piece E around SS until it aligns with piece B at WL. Tape or pin them together.

  • Pivot piece F around SS until it aligns with piece D at WL. Tape or pin them together.

  • You should now have a spiral-shaped skirt attached to your bodice block at four points: CF, CB, BP1, BP2.

  • Add seam allowances of 1 cm to all edges except CF and CB.

  • Cut along CF and CB through all layers of fabric.

  • Your pattern is ready. You can trace it on another piece of paper if you want to keep your original blocks intact.

Here are the steps to sew the pattern:

  • Cut out your fabric pieces according to the pattern. You will need one piece for the bodice and four pieces for the skirt. Mark all the notches and seam allowances on the wrong side of the fabric.

  • Sew the darts on the bodice piece, starting from the dart legs and ending at the dart point. Press the darts toward the center front and center back.

  • Sew the shoulder seams of the bodice piece, right sides together. Press the seams open.

  • Sew the side seams of the skirt pieces, right sides together. Press the seams open.

  • Sew the skirt pieces to the bodice piece along the waistline, right sides together. Match the notches and seam allowances. Press the seam toward the bodice.

  • Sew a narrow hem along the neckline and armholes of the bodice piece. Turn under 0.5 cm of fabric twice and stitch close to the folded edge.

  • Sew a narrow hem along the hemline of the skirt pieces. Turn under 0.5 cm of fabric twice and stitch close to the folded edge.

  • Finish the center front and center back edges of the dress with a serger or a zigzag stitch.

  • Attach a hook and eye closure at the top of the center back opening.

  • Wrap the dress around your body, starting from the center front and ending at the center back. Secure it with pins or clips.

  • Try on the dress and adjust it to your liking. You can make it tighter or looser by overlapping more or less fabric at the back.

  • Mark where you want to place buttons and buttonholes along the spiral seam. You can use as many or as few buttons as you want.

  • Remove the dress and sew buttonholes on one side of the spiral seam and buttons on the other side, following your markings.

  • Your spiral dress is ready to wear. Enjoy!

Some examples of Pattern Magic 3 designs

To give you an idea of what you can create with Pattern Magic 3, here are some examples of the designs from the book and how they look in real life. These examples are taken from various sources online, such as blogs, slideshows, and social media. You can also find more examples by searching for the hashtag #patternmagic3 on Instagram.

The first example is the "Sculpting a surface" design, which creates a bodice with a three-dimensional surface that resembles a polyhedron. The design is made by dividing the pattern into triangles and then enlarging one point of each triangle, so that they stick out when sewn together. The result is a stunning and futuristic look that can be worn as a top or a dress.

The second example is the "Making waves" design, which creates a bodice with a wavy surface that resembles a droopy boob. The design is made by drafting a wave shape and then slashing and spreading the upper part of the wave, so that it becomes bigger than the lower part and protrudes from the bodice. A gusset is then fit in to fill the gap between the waves. The result is a playful and quirky look that can be worn as a top or a dress.

The third example is the "Spiral dress" design, which creates a dress with a spiral-shaped skirt that wraps around the body. The design is based on a basic bodice block and a half-circle skirt block. The skirt block is divided into four parts and then attached to the bodice block at opposite sides, creating a spiral effect. The result is a dynamic and elegant look that can be wrapped in different ways.
